EPS initiates Beslan Children's Fund Project
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is asking the media and public to help raise the spirits of victims of the recent tragedy that occurred in Beslan, Russia on September 3rd, 2004.
The EPS has launched a major initiative, in partnership with the Russian-Canadian Association of Alberta, to raise enough money to bring 25 children from Beslan to Edmonton in January 2005.
EPS Inspector Dan Jones, who is heading up the mission, says, "It is our hope that the kindness and generosity of Edmontonians will help show these children that people living halfway around the world truly care about their well-being and their future. These horrific events are something that no child should ever have to experience."
Edmontonians are asked to donate money at any police divisional or community station front counter or directly to the "Beslan Children's Fund" at the Emergency Services Credit Union (14909 -121A Avenue or 7203 Roper Rd.).
The motivation for this project comes from EPS members who have served with UN missions in war-torn countries. The recent hostage taking in a Beslan school has moved some of these members to do something special for the victims.
